The Name Behind the Name

Otto Schulze
and the Art of Velocity

In 1902, German engineer Otto Schulze patented the world's first speedometer — a device that transformed how humanity understood motion. For the first time, speed could be read as clearly as the time on a clock face.

OTTO S. was founded on that same insight: time and speed are inseparable. Our watches carry his name as a declaration that precision in motion is the highest form of design.

A Name
with a Legacy

OTTO S. is named after Otto Schulze — the German engineer who, in 1902, patented the world's first speedometer. His invention didn't just measure speed; it changed how human beings related to time in motion.

We believe the relationship between time and speed is inseparable. Our watches are built on that conviction — instruments designed for people who are always in motion, and who want to mark every second of it.

The Man Who
Gave Speed a Face

Otto Schulze was a German mechanical engineer working at the turn of the twentieth century. In 1902, he filed Patent No. 86,358 — a device that could continuously measure and display the velocity of a moving vehicle in real time. The speedometer was born.

Before Schulze, speed was felt but never read. After him, every driver could glance down and know exactly where they stood. We carry his name because that act — the act of reading time and motion at a glance — is precisely what a watch does.

Preston Like
Founder & Watch Designer
Preston Like founded OTTO S. in New York City with a singular obsession: build the watch he'd never been able to find.

Built in
New York

Preston Like is a New York-born watch designer who spent years working in product design before turning his attention entirely to horology. His frustration was simple: the driver's watch had never been done right.

Most sport watches were built for divers or pilots. Preston wanted something for the person at the wheel — a dial as legible as a speedometer, a case as clean as a racing instrument, and a movement with the honesty to match.

He named the company after Otto Schulze because Schulze's patent was, to Preston, the first perfect intersection of timekeeping and velocity. OTTO S. is the continuation of that idea.
